Tax Justice Amid Multiple Crises
The Pan-African Conference on Illicit Financial Flows provided the platform for different actors on the continent to come together once again and assess priorities:
The Deputy Executive Secretary of ATAF, Ms. Mary Baine, retorted, "As we celebrate the 10th Pan-African Conference on ITFs and Taxation, it is critical to take stock of the the state of play of the fight against ITFs in a largely recovering world economy, with the ongoing debate on the global tax system and the ever-increasing volume of ITFs; this partnership with the African Union Commission, the TJNA and other key actors, contributes directly to taking stock of this."
This conference aimed to identify transformative actions and solutions for actors such as African governments, policy makers, civil society organizations, the private sector and other policy actors that are key to mobilizing domestic resources.
At the beginning of the 10th CAP, Alvin Mosioma said, "The rhetoric about the development goals is about leaving no one behind, yet Africa is the only continent that has been left behind in every respect, whether it is debt, climate change, or the pandemic of COVID-19. As history has shown, African countries need to realize that they depend on themselves and stop relying on the support of the rich countries in the North. They need to focus on internal mechanisms that will sustain their economic development."
SID's Executive Director, Stefano Prato was there to discuss the importance of a UN Tax Conventioned and shared: "The call for a UN Tax Convention is not only a struggle of the Tax Justice movement but of all those who want a turning point to transform our realities."
This year, the African Tax Administrations Forum and the African Tax Justice Network jointly hosted the CAP under the theme: Tax Justice in the Midst of Multiple Crises.
The conference was held in Lusaka, Zambia at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel on 28-29 September 2022 and was also broadcasted virtually.
